Os desafios face a esta realidade são muitos, e exigem de todos nós um novo olhar devido ao seu impacto a nível social. Os idosos, antes tidos como uma honra e grande prestígio social, são hoje contemplados num leque de preocupações na sociedade em geral. Assumem-se cada vez mais como uma categoria socialmente desvalorizada, onde a manutenção dos laços com a comunidade envolvente tende a diminuir, fazendo deles um grupo extremamente vulnerável. Numa sociedade que insiste dar resposta a todo o problema social que o envelhecimento populacional acarreta, é inevitável compreender o papel que as instituições assumem face ao mesmo. Por estas razões considero pertinente este estudo que incide sobre um fenómeno geral de institucionalização da velhice. Ao longo do mesmo tentarei compreender que características assumem as instituições de hoje perante um cenário de crescente necessidade institucional da velhice, procurando de igual forma analisar se as mesmas são capazes de reproduzir características que permitam aos nossos idosos a vivência de uma velhice plena. Para a concretização desta investigação colaboraram idosos de diversas instituições do concelho da Covilhã, diretores (as) técnicos (as), e familiares de idosos a viver em instituição.The process of aging that occurs in developed and developing countries is a reality that we all recognize and have to face. The challenges face this reality are many, and require from all of us a new look due to its social impact. The elderly, previously considered an honor and great social prestige, are now covered a range of concerns in society in general. They take up more and more as a devalued social category, where the maintenance of ties with the surrounding community tends to decrease, making them an extremely vulnerable group. In a society that insists to respond to any social problem that aging population brings, it is inevitable to understand the role that institutions take over the same. For these reasons I believe that this is a relevant study that focuses on a general phenomenon of institutionalization of the elderly. Over the same, I will try to understand what characteristics assume institutions today against a background of growing institutional need of old age, looking equally to consider whether they are able to reproduce features that enable our seniors to live an age full.
