A investigação procura contribuir para compreender como os homens de meia idade de três etnias diferentes construíram as suas masculinidades, refletem sobre o género e lidam com as suas emoções. Espera-se uma dissonância entre as perceções e experiências destes homens e os debates mais recentes sobre as novas masculinidades, contudo consideramos haver forte necessidade de compreender os seus olhares e perceber o conhecimento que produzem e transmitem nas suas comunidades locais. Procura-se também nesta dissertação dar voz à literatura existente em África e na Guiné Bissau que investiga sobre estas temáticas. Os resultados permitem-nos constatar que apesar da grande diversidade encontrada, os homens entrevistados partilham visões fortemente marcadas pelas suas vivências de violência e representações de um mundo fortemente patriarcal. Neste processo as novas formas de ser homem são interpretadas como desestabilizadoras e ameaçadoras da matchundadi aprendida.The dissertation presented here seeks to address the issue of gender, African masculinities andemotions, being a case study in Guinea-Bissau. The research seeks to contributetounderstanding how middle-aged men from three different ethnic groups built theirmasculinities, reflected on gender and dealt with their emotions. I hope that thereisadissonance between the perceptions and experiences of these men and the more recent soberdebates as new masculinities, but we believe that there is a strong need to understandtheirviews and understand the knowledge they cause and transmit in their local communities. Thisdissertation also seeks to give voice to the existing literature in Africa and Guinea-Bissauthatinvestigate these themes. Our results allow us to observe that, despite the great diversity found, men share views strongly marked by their experiences of violence and represent a stronglypatriarchal world.
