Abstract(s)
mortalidade, a nível global.
eventos cardiovasculares no futuro.
nomeadamente a doença coronária.
Erectile dysfunction, defined as a man’s persistent inability to obtain and/or maintain a penile erection sufficient to ensure satisfactory sexual performance, has seen its prevalence rise in recent years. Of all types of erectile dysfunction, the organic vasculogenic is the most prevalent. In addition to advanced age, this disease has risk factors that overlap those of coronary heart disease, that is, cardiovascular risk factors. Coronary heart disease is currently the disease associated with greater morbidity and mortality globally. Its main risk factors are dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity and smoking. These two entities have the endothelial lesion as a common link, which leads to the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaques in blood vessels. As the accumulation of atherosclerosis occurs, the first repercussions of blood obstruction appears, namely erectile dysfunction and, years later, coronary heart disease. As the clinical expression of erectile dysfunction often precedes coronary heart disease, the development of symptomatic erectile dysfunction may serve as a strong predictor of cardiovascular events in the future. Thus, there is potential clinical utility in the early detection and treatment of erectile dysfunction in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, namely coronary heart disease.
