Abstract(s)
Taking into account the current job market, where quality makes a difference, this requires that nurses with management functions have the skills to better exercise their professional activity. The main objective of this study is to identify the skills valued in nurses with management functions, which was carried out at the Cova da Beira University Hospital Center (CHUCB), which is a Public Business Entity (E.P.E), located in Covilhã-Portugal. To achieve the objective of this investigation, an exploratory study with a descriptive character was carried out, in which a qualitative approach is used, with a nonprobabilistic snowball sample, carried out with the twelve CHUCB health professionals, so that the interviews were carried out in the same hospital, in person and individually, with a semi-structured script with open questions. Also, the collected data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. According to the four categories of analysis used in this research, especially the most valued competencies in nurses in management roles, perception of the gaps between valued and held competencies, as well as the process of developing the competencies of nurses with management roles, the results showed that the ability to manage conflicts is one of the most valued skills in nurses with management functions. Also, it was found that the competence gaps identified in nurses with management functions can be filled through increased training in the management area. Thus, the form of competence development most valued by the interviewees is through continuous professional training. Thus, it was concluded that, as a manager, a nurse needs to know how to manage conflicts, as well as find solutions for different situations that generate conflicts. Also, it is expected that nurse managers have specific training in management, so that they can perform their management functions in the best way possible.
