Abstract(s)
Several studies indicate that atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin, recurrent and most common during childhood. It affects between 10 and 20% of the pediatric population in Portugal and the number of cases in the last three decades has increased. A multifactorial disease, which comes mainly from genetic as well as environmental issues. Children living in urban areas, where pollution is a constant in their lives, are more likely to develop inflammatory problems, one of them being atopic dermatitis. This issue leads us to another problem very common in our society, the lack of concern for the environment and the lack of awareness of the limits of its resources, which is affecting, more and more, the generations to come. It is imperative to realize that every act has a great environmental impact, even the purchase of a garment. Thus, to improve the lives of children suffering from atopic dermatitis, the idea was to create a sustainable piece of clothing with added functionality. Therefore, a few pieces of children's clothing, exclusively produced in organic cotton, imbued with natural essential oils microencapsulated in B-cyclodextrins, with antibiotic, antisepsis and tranquillizing properties, were developed, so that, during use, the child feels more comfortable and to improve the conditions of their illness.
