Abstract(s)
Since the last decades of the 20th century, tourism in Cape Verde has been one of the fastest growing sectors, therefore being one of the biggest income sources of the country. However, this growth can create more pressure on existing resources, with negative impacts on several levels. There is clear concern about the appreciation, preservation and conservation of the national heritage, with emphasis on the historic center of Ribeira Grande, Cidade Velha. The town that carries a unique history in the world, was the birthplace of the Creole nation and the birthplace of slave traffic. It had a period of golden times, almost ephemeral, but knew how to take advantage of it and be efficient at the time. The theme of this dissertation is a study that relates history with urban design, the view from various parts of the city, economics, sociology, heritage and tourism. A form of demonstration on how to revitalize the historic place. Cidade Velha is almost more rural than urban, is valuing the environment, preserving cultural and natural heritage, built and natural underwater heritage too. This is connected with a research study about the history, landscape, urban appropriations, and equipment, so as to give upsurge to a “recycling " of the area and the World Heritage space, without disturbing in the environment, making it‟s attractive, and developing its economy sector in Sustainable Tourism.
