Abstract(s)
As diferentes funções
Light is as an element, or as the architect Alberto Campo Baeza classifies it, an indispensable material in the construction of any architectural work (Baeza, 1996). However, there are several ways to treat Light in architecture, which are first addressed immediately when designing a project. Should a project be modeled around light? Do the different functions of a project require a specific light treatment? How many types of natural light are there? What are the different ways of looking at different types of light? There are a lot of answers and understandings on this subject, being the interest of this paper the study of projects and approaches concerned with natural Light as a conceptual basis. It is possible do observe, over the centuries and on different architectural styles, several buildings where Light acquieres a prominent role. This is truly a subject of great relevance in the history of architecture. It is important to underline the relentless pursuit of perfect harmony between space and quantity/quality of light, since the Roman era until the contemporaneity. Towards this framework, this dissertation poses as fundamental objective the understanding of natural Light’s role in architecture’s history and it’s influence in different works and architects. Books, documents and different works have been studied in order to understand natural Light’s role in the conception of space, as well as it’s relevance, or lack of it (shadow), during the conception of a project. This work also integrates the realization of a trip, with the objective of directly evaluate and experience the aspects mentioned above. To this end, five different architectural works were visited, being this trip was accompanied by a written and photographic diary, also incorporated here. This trip was also intended to “collect” a set of references about Light, to be integrated and reinterpreted in the final practical project. Lastly, a project was developed to create a route that acts as a tribute to natural light in architecture. A route that crosses various spaces, with different types of light and atmosferes, from the darkest shade to a final space of absolute natural light.
