Abstract(s)
This dissertation presents the project that aims the rehabilitation of a building with more than one hundred years. Talking about rehabilitation is talking about an integrated intervention and adaptation of a building, in order to allow its use, improving its performance levels and the preservation of cultural and significant values. As so, it is intended not only to respect the present architecture, but also to modernize the building for the present days, without decharacterizing the existing heritage. The building in study had several uses and was quite marked by its history and location, hence being the choice for this master's dissertation. It is located in Guarda, a Portuguese city. It is a building with many years, which has passed from generation to generation, situated in the heart of the Historical Center of the city, in front of the east door of Guarda’s Cathedral, the city the ex-libris. Talking about Guarda is talking about the highest city in Portugal, in Center region and subregions of Beiras and Serra da Estrela. The whole landscape is marked by granite, by mountain climate and by pure and cold air. This project aims to demonstrate how the conjugation of heritage and tourism are an asset in development, not only economic, but also socio-cultural. Thus, there is a need to understand, monitor and continually evaluate the growth process, so that its positive impacts prevail over the negative, as the traditional Portuguese architecture can combine with modern architecture and prove how ancient materials can combine and harmonize with those of nowadays.
