Abstract(s)
This thesis aims to develop the thematic around the relationship between the rural space, the Man, and the “natural” space. These spaces are increasingly depopulated, less utilized, and mostly, less balanced. The locals, seeing themselves forced to leave their houses, cultures, traditions, experiences, habits, seeking for better jobs, economic sustainability, are leaving (abandoned) the rural space. Because of this abandonment, the natural space, try to reborn in an imbalanced way, or is repopulated with monocultures of fast growth “exotic” trees, turning these spaces uncharacteristic and nothing favorable to the maintenance and survival of the native fauna and flora. Regarding these conditions, this thesis was elaborated, centered on the study of the Village of Friúmes, county town of Penacova, Coimbra district. This Village is located between the Sierra Atalhada and the River Alva, attractive touristic locations. In the Sierra Atalhada is located a tourist complex of windmills. In the River are some river beaches, slightly exploited, despite its touristic potential. The purpose of this thesis is to elaborate an urban project proposal for the area between the River Alva, the Village of Friúmes and the Sierra Atalhada. The intention is to propose intervention schemes for the rural and “natural” space, with the aim of achieving cultural, social, environmental and economic sustainability of the Village, by unifying it to its greatest touristic and economic potential, the Sierra and the River.
