Abstract(s)
Desta maneira, existe a
This dissertation focuses on the study of temporary shelters for transhumant shepherds in Serra da Estrela, with a view to mapping and systematizing them. Since these structures served as support for transhumant shepherds, the study began with the theme of transhumance, which arises from the need to travel to provide food for the animals, in turn for the purpose of producing wool and cheese. Knowing that this activity is currently disappearing, we seek to discover how shelters are related to this decline. In this way, we seek to answer questions such as the number of shelters for transhumant shepherds existing in Serra da Estrela, their location, whether they are still used, whether all the shelters are intended for transhumant shepherds and the conditions in which they are found. To answer these questions, contact with shepherds and field work proved to be fundamental for the identification and documentation of these structures. Due to the extension of the territory, the study was restricted to the Loriga Glacier Valley, given the importance that the transhumant practice acquired in the past in this region. During the investigation, it was possible to conclude that Serra da Estrela played a fundamental role in transhumant activity in the past and is the last stronghold of this pastoral practice today. It was also possible to verify the use of shelters by shepherds, the precarious state in which these shelters are found and a high number of abandoned shelters. In view of the information collected, it was found that the conditions of the shelters constitute one of the factors that contributed to the decline of this activity. Therefore, there is a need to intervene in shelters in order to reverse the disappearance of the transhumant practice in Serra da Estrela.
