- The impact of receiving formal and informal care on biopsychological health Case studyPublication . The author, as a former carer and a medical student, aimed to explore the way care impacts the lives of individuals that depend on others. To portray the topic a care-dependent individual with a spinal cord injury presented her observations of the care she receives which allows her to live an autonomous life. Building on the patient’s experience it was possible to identify several aspects of the care and of the carers that could be improved to achieve a safe and pertinent care. In addition, some suggestions were made to the medical community to further the discussion of this topic. Method. An interview was done to evaluate this issue qualitatively based on a patient’s personal experience; the interview script was designed by the author. Results. The patient exposed her perspective on the care she receives, portrayed the carers that help her currently and suggested how their role could be improved. Additionally, the patient shared how this care impacts her life. Conclusion. Although this case study is based on one person’s experience, the information detailed in this paper may stimulate further discussion and research by the scientific and medical community. Thus, it is possible to increase the knowledge on the topic, to provide appropriate resources and ensure a quality focused care that contributes to the biopsychological health of dependent individuals.
