Abstract(s)
Medicinal plants are the most accessible and available health resource for most communities in the world, especially in Africa where the health care network is quite deficient. The present research focuses on the identification of chemical compounds of the plant Phyllanthus welwitschianus. The leaves of the study plant were collected in Umpata, Huila province in Angola, where the population used them to treat wounds. The plant material was macerated and exhaustively extracted with methanol at room temperature. A sample of the methanol extract was f fractionated with a mixture of several solvents of increasing polarities, resulting in ten fractions, of which three compounds were isolated: tetracos-1-ene, ß-sitosterol, and sucrose. Tetracos-1-ene was isolated from the 9:1 hexane/ethyl acetate fraction, ß-sitosterol was isolated from the 1:1 hexane/ethyl acetate fraction, and sucrose was isolated from the 1:1 ethyl acetate/methanol fraction, the compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods namely IR, 1D and 2D NMR. These results were compared with those referenced in the literature, confirming that ß-sitosterol and sucrose had already been identified in the same genera.
