A Covilhã é uma cidade rica em Património Arquitetónico mas torna-se necessário que se tomem medidas para a preservação e reutilização de espaços históricos e emblemáticos que se encontram esquecidos. Apesar da preocupação crescente na reabilitação de espaços e edifícios, a realidade é que ainda existe muito trabalho a empreender, sobretudo porque se fala não só em património arquitetónico mas também cultural e histórico. A proteção e a reabilitação de espaços abandonados é uma forma de reconhecimento e valorização do passado e de, simultaneamente, projetar um novo futuro num edifício que carrega uma história que deve ser preservada. No caso da Covilhã, importa não esquecer a sua história e homenagear as pessoas e acontecimentos que fizeram parte dela e que tornaram a cidade um ponto de referência na indústria de lanifícios. A Covilhã tem edifícios com um grande potencial arquitetónico, que se encontram em degradação, pelo que importa fazer disso uma vantagem.
Baseando-se na história desta cidade e nas suas memórias associadas ao têxtil, esta dissertação procura valorizar o património arquitetónico existente e tem como principal objetivo reabilitar um espaço atualmente desaproveitado e ao abandono. Não se tem feito uso da existência deste espaço e das suas vantagens, pelo que a sua reabilitação significa a valorização da história do local, promovendo uma ligação entre o passado e o futuro, com o objetivo de tornar o centro histórico mais ativo, através de atividades culturais e artísticas que liguem diferentes gerações e promovam o que melhor há e houve no interior do país e, em concreto, nesta cidade.
Esta dissertação apresenta uma proposta de reabilitação do edifício da Garagem de São João, na Covilhã, associada ao movimento Expand Your Mind, pelo que se pretende conceber um espaço multifuncional assente não só na vertente cultural mas também na criação de oportunidades para jovens criativos. Ambiciona-se mesmo que, além deste edifício, também o centro histórico ganhe mais vida e dinamismo, pelo que, para além da proposta de reabilitação, este trabalho pretende dar a conhecer outros espaços industriais que se encontram abandonados nesta zona, através da narrativa e da fotografia. Espera-se que, num futuro próximo, se ponham em prática atividades culturais que permitam conhecer o património arquitetónico industrial daquela que foi conhecida como a “Manchester portuguesa”.
Esta proposta procura recuperar e preservar as memórias de uma comunidade que fez parte deste local, mas de olhos postos no futuro, através da inovação, concebendo um novo espaço cultural, criativo e empreendedor, incentivando uma nova geração de trabalhadores e promovendo uma Covilhã mais ativa, produtiva e atrativa.
Covilhã is a city rich in architectural heritage but it is imperative that further steps be taken for the preservation and reuse of historic and iconic spaces that are being forgotten. Despite the growing concern for the rehabilitation of buildings and spaces, there is still much work to be undertaken, especially because we're speaking of not only architectural but also cultural and historical heritage. The protection and rehabilitation of abandoned spaces is a form of recognition and appreciation of the past and simultaneously an opportunity to design a new future for a building that carries a history that must be preserved. In the case of Covilha, we should not forget its history and honor its peoples and the events that took place there and made the city a landmark in the wool industry. Covilhã has buildings with great architectural potential, which are derelict, and its imperative to use that as an opportunity for development. Based on the history of this city and the memories associated with the textile industry, this dissertation seeks to valorize the existing architectural heritage and aims to rehabilitate a currently abandoned and unused space. The existence of this space and its benefits has been neglected, so its rehabilitation means the appreciation of the history of the site, providing a link between the past and the future, with the goal of making the historic center more active through cultural and artistic activities that can bring together different generations and promote the best features the interior of the country, and specifically this city, can offer. This dissertation presents a proposal for the rehabilitation of the building of the Garagem de São João, in Covilha, associated with the movement Expand Your Mind, aiming to design a multifunctional space based not only on the cultural facet but also in creating a variety of opportunities for young creatives. We aim to, beyond this building, bring a new and more dynamic life to the the historic center, so that, beyond the proposed rehabilitation, this paper intends to show other industrial spaces that are abandoned in this area, through narrative and photography. We hope that in the near future, cultural activities are undertaken to make known the industrial architectural heritage of what was known as the "Portuguese Manchester". This proposal seeks to recover and preserve the memories of a community that was part of this site, whilst looking to the future through innovation, conceiving a new cultural space, creative and entrepreneurial, encouraging a new generation of workers and promoting a more active city, productive and attractive.
