Abstract(s)
This study aims to evaluate the relationship between the levels of self-determination and the levels of food competence perception Participated in the study of descriptive and exploratory nature 119 individuals, with more than 18 years, registered in the year of 2017/2018 in any Institution of Higher Education in Portugal. The participants aged between 18 and 52 years responded to a protocol which envisaged the following instruments: Sociodemographic Questionnaire, “Escala de Autodeterminação”, the Portuguese version of the “Self-Determination Scale (SDSp) (Sheldon & Deci, 1996; Sheldon, Ryan, & Reis, 1996; Silva, Vieira, Coutinho, Minderico, Matos, & Sardinha, 2010) and “ Escala de Perceção de Competência”, Portuguese version of the “Perceived Competence Scale” (PCSp) (Williams, Freedman, & Deci 1998; Mestre & Ribeiro, 2008). No statistically significant associations were identified between levels of self-determination and levels of perceived competence, nor between levels of self-determination (global), levels of self-awareness, levels perceived of choice function of sex. In the case of perceived competence, on the other hand, the results suggest statistically significant differences, depending on the sex. The results obtained do not, for the most part, meet the generality of those found through the systematic review of the literature. Therefore, despite the existing literature indicates the importance of self-determination and perceived competece for health behaviors indicators, namely those related to food, and for the association between those variables, there were not found in the presente study statistical significance for most of these statements, except for some aspects of self-determination and perceived competence. We conclude with a reflection on the limitations of this exploratory investigation and the possible explanatory reasons of the results found, as well as suggestions for future research.
