Abstract(s)
Nestas PME a
The inter-organizational communication is viwed as a critical factor in the development of strategical alliances, since it produces value and functions as a tool to a better performance. The aim of this study is to investigate whether inter-organizational communication is central to the performance of strategic alliances, based on four communicational dimensions (will, behavior, commitment and quality). To accomplish this goal, from a relational perspective, it was adopted a qualitative approach, using five Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) /cases in Portugal. Key informant interviews of these SMEs and document search served to collect data. Based on the analyzed cases, the results of this study show that communication is fundamental, valued and implemented in the SMEs studied. However, it is an informal communication, a mirror of an established cooperation and not based on protocols. In these SMEs communication is the basis for understanding the aims of the alliance and its fulfillment, which generates satisfaction within the partners for the success and good performance of the alliance. Communication also allows an alliance to be maintained and developed on a continuous basis, enabling the creation of bonds between partners. Some implications for theory and practice in this area of research are also presented. This study contributes to the literature in the area of strategic management, as it exposes existing phenomena about inter-organizational communication and its relation with the performance of strategic alliances in SMEs, as well as advances to the knowledge about the relational view. The application and development of inter-organizational communication, in all its communicational dimensions, is the foundation for the maintenance of alliances over time and its excellent performance. The failure rate of alliances is high and, therefore, this study shows that the professionalization and practice of inter-organizational communication in strategic alliances is fundamental.
