Abstract(s)
The development of health systems is a priority action and nurses have a fundamental role in defining the standards of care provided. Indeed, nurses represent the largest professional group within health organizations. In this context, health organizations should promote a climate favourable to nurses’ professional development with a view to their collective entrepreneurship to benefit the care provided to users. In recent decades, the study of leadership and collective entrepreneurship has become more popular. This interest emerges from its association with variables considered to have potential for productivity and organizational effectiveness. The aim of this study is therefore to understand the role of leadership in the collective entrepreneurship of health professionals and the influence of behavioural factors (commitment, communication and collaboration) on this relationship. To achieve this objective, the context of analysis is a representative sample of collaborators/nurses in the Local Health Unit (ULS) in Guarda. This research revealed that leadership, more specifically transformational leadership, has a dominant role in the context of health organizations, particularly regarding their collaborators’ collective entrepreneurship. In the organization studied, there is indeed a relationship of influence between leadership style and the collective entrepreneurship of its collaborators, namely nurses, whose commitment and communication have a mediating role in this relationship. Therefore, this study contributes to advancing theory on the relationship between the role of leadership and collective entrepreneurship in a health organization. In practical terms, it allows the conclusion that the fact there is a strong relationship between transformational leadership and nurses’ collective entrepreneurship means the latter presents a relevant role in this organization segment. Health organizations must therefore be made aware of this type of leadership, as increasingly leadership influences the degree of collective entrepreneurship in their collaborators. If those in charge of health organizations are sensitive to this matter, they will achieve positive results in their collaborators’ performance, which in turn contributes to the organization’s success and the level of care provided. Health organizations should therefore find strategies to increase collective entrepreneurship, for this to contribute collaborators’ attitude and behaviour.
