Abstract(s)
concelho.
Ageing is currently a growing global trend, and the district of Castelo Branco is no exception to this demographic reality. This phenomenon brings forth new challenges and needs in terms of healthcare and social care that require innovative and appropriate policy measures and responses translated into services, programs and resources. However, when compared to other European countries, significant disparities in responses and support available for the elderly population with cognitive deficits in Portugal become evident. In this regard, this master's dissertation emphasizes the need to change the prevailing paradigm of inactivity and apathy that dominates the majority of the elderly's hours and aims to promote a plan for the implementation of a network of cognitive stimulation centres in the district of Castelo Branco. The objective is to meet the needs of the population with mild to moderate cognitive deficits, mainly seen in more vulnerable elderly people, in order to promote active and healthy ageing in an optimal learning environment, consequently leading to cognitive, social, and quality of life benefits. The proposed plan involves creating a new type of specialized social response to dementia by adapting existing day centres in the region into cognitive stimulation centres. Prior to implementing this network on a larger scale in the district, a pilot project is proposed for the Fundão municipality. The design is a multi-centre, singleblind, randomized controlled clinical trial, to assess the viability and efficiency of cognitive stimulation therapy in elderly individuals who attend the municipality day centres. This pioneering project aspires to redefine the care associated with the ageing population in Castelo Branco, representing an innovative approach to the cognitive health of the region's residents.
