Abstract(s)
This thesis aims to understand the theme of rehabilitation of Heritage as an instrument that contributes to the permanence of a collective memory that must be transposed into the future. In this sense, it explores the question of the reconversion of uses as a means of intervening in the built heritage, taking advantage of the old buildings to give a new use in the current society. The present study focuses on the Fortress of Peniche, national patrimonial building. The development of the work seeks to understand the historical processes that led to the implantation of the fortress, and the evolution of the different phases of construction over time, from the first building up to the present day. Afterwards, and before the value as regards the way of intervening in the heritage, a research is carried out on the history of the building. The importance of this problem rests on the fact that it gives a new use to the old buildings to allow the reclassification of the degraded areas, as well as to preserve the built heritage. The first phase of the research involves research into the rehabilitation and preservation of heritage, followed by the study of the city of Peniche, located on the coast of Portugal, where a unique and mythical fortress dates from the 16th century. The peculiarity of this group was what drove the choice of this place as a study base, and attention was paid to its partial degradation. The Fortress of Peniche will be the target of a rehabilitation proposal based on the need to offer something that benefits the city of Peniche. This will be endowed with new spaces that adapt to new situations and uses, but without losing the values of the past as a bridge to the future.
