Abstract(s)
No
The present work was developed within the scope of the “Internship” of the Integrated Master's in Pharmaceutical Sciences and includes two chapters. The first chapter, entitled “The involvement of portuguese pharmacists in the context of humanitarian aid and/or cooperation for development”, concerns the research work whose main objective was to highlight the importance of the pharmacist's presence and intervention in a humanitarian context. To this end, eight semi-structured online interviews were conducted between June and August 2022. The data collected from the interviews were analyzed, and in addition to characterizing the sample and the missions carried out by the interviewees, an analysis was made of the impact of the interviewees' professional experience on the missions they undertook, the challenges and difficulties encountered by the interviewed pharmacists during their missions, a description of the pharmacist's role in humanitarian contexts, the differences between the pharmacist's intervention in traditional and humanitarian support contexts, the reasons for the limited recognition of pharmacists' actions in these contexts and the solutions to mitigate this problem, and, lastly, the training of pharmacists in the humanitarian field. Pharmacists play a crucial role in responding to humanitarian crises, both in planning and execution, as well as in preparing for potential crises. In addition to the logistical tasks traditionally associated with pharmacists, their on-site contribution is much broader, encompassing clinical aspects such as managing chronic diseases, counseling the population and other healthcare professionals, managing donations and training and empowerment of the local healthcare teams, among others. However, despite their importance, the recognition of this contribution is often limited, resulting in few opportunities for pharmacists to integrate multidisciplinary healthcare teams responding to humanitarian crises. This lack of recognition is largely due to the limited visibility of pharmacists' involvement, both in the humanitarian and pharmaceutical spheres. To overcome this obstacle, it is essential for pharmacists to explore new areas, particularly those of a humanitarian nature. Additionally, it is equally important to increase the availability of specific training in this area to attract pharmacists to it. This training would not only empower pharmacists for a more effective response but also strengthen the multidisciplinary healthcare teams they are part of, thereby enhancing overall response capacity. The second chapter concerns the curricular internship in Community Pharmacy, carried out at Vale de Prazeres Pharmacy from February 7th to June 17th, 2022, under the guidance of Dr. Maria João Carvalheira Rodrigues. This chapter provides a comprehensive description of the experiences lived, the knowledge acquired and applied, as well as the activities carried out during the performance of the duties and responsibilities of a community pharmacist. This foray into the world of community pharmacy not only expanded my understanding of pharmaceutical practice but also reinforced the critical importance of pharmacy as an essential pillar of support to the community, always available to offer guidance and assistance in health-related matters.
