Abstract(s)
infeçÔes do trato urinĂĄrio.
produzir alteraçÔes no crescimento celular.
This project is divided in two chapters, describing my professionalizing experience to obtain the masterâs degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, consisting in an investigation component, as well as another part, which lays upon my internship in community pharmacy. The first chapter corresponds to the investigation part, named âStudy of the effect of sound frequencies on the growth of Escherichia coliâ. Nowadays, it is known that Escherichia coli is responsible for most of the urinary tract infections. This, along with the rising of antibiotic resistance rates, makes the need of selecting the adequate antibiotic therapy, based on the susceptibility of each specific bacteria, something essential. However, this process usually takes between 48 to 72 hours, making the need of innovation something that is evident, in order to obtain a microbiological diagnosis earlier. Sound, a physical disturbance of vibratory nature, could have the ability to induce changes in cellular growth. Therefore, two different sound frequencies were selected (1.000Hz and 10.000Hz) to apply (for 1 hour) on the different growth phases of E. coli, resorting to two independent essays, each in duplicate. It was found that sound stimulation could, in fact, induce changes in cellular growth, causing a modest growth increase, lag phase being the most interesting towards the application of the sound stimulus. Nevertheless, no statistically significant results were obtained. It was concluded that future studies are needed to optimize the relation between sound stimuli and cellular growth boost. The second chapter illustrates the skills that I acquired during my internship in community pharmacy, that took place at FarmĂĄcia Avenida (Leiria), which was fundamental in my training towards becoming a future pharmacist. In this chapter, the several spectra in which lays the role of the community pharmacist in 2020 are described, also mentioning the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic had on the pharmacy.
