Abstract(s)
Introduction: According to the National Register of Pre-hospital Cardiorespiratory Arrest, in 2016, 15 432 cardiorespiratory arrests were confirmed in an out-of-hospital setting. In only 20 percent of the occurrences, Basic Life Support (BLS) maneuvers were initiated prior to the arrival of emergency teams. BLS includes a set of defined procedures and standardized methodologies whose final objective is the reestablishment of the cardiorespiratory function, adopting a determinant role in the survival of patients. Objectives: To understand if the population of the Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI) realizes the importance of the application of BLS maneuvers in case of cardiorespiratory arrest and what is their knowledge about them; To identify which variables can influence knowledge about SBV, namely, gender, age, literacy, among others. Materials and methods: An observational and cross-sectional study, in which a questionnaire was distributed to all UBI students, professors and employees. Results: 244 responses were obtained, excluding 15 because they did not fit the inclusion criteria. In a population sample where 71.6% were female, 83% were aged between 18 and 33 years and 65.9% had university education, it was verified that 56.8% of the population had training in BLS. As for the degree of knowledge about the procedure, there was a great variability of responses. In the questions that focused on evaluating the various steps of the adult BLS algorithm, more than 80% of the sample answered correctly. Regarding the questions about the knowledge of the sample on the use of the external automatic defibrillator (EAD) and the application of the airway clearance algorithm, 60% and 87.7% of the sample, respectively, did not indicate the correct option. Regarding the question about the knowledge on the BLS algorithm of the child, only 12.3% of the sample answered correctly. It is important to emphasize that 98.7% of the population consider it an asset to have training in this area and is available for this knowledge transmission. When asked about the obstacles encountered, they refer mainly the lack of information and time. There was also a dependence between the fact that an individual had training in BLS and the variables gender, function performed in UBI and the connection to the Health area. Discussion and conclusion: The results of this study reinforce the need to provide the general population with training in BLS, in order to reduce mortality and morbidity rates. It is believed that one of the key steps will be the theoretical and practical teaching of this competence during the 3rd cycle or secondary education.
