Abstract(s)
The rise of right-wing populism, through social media, has allowed extremist politicians to thrive in countries that embrace a democratic regime. Thus, in the Brazilian and Portuguese contexts, extremist speeches, the sharing of fake news, and the process of discrediting democracy have become increasingly common and encouraged by populist leaders André Ventura (PT) and Jair Bolsonaro (BR). To further aid in the process of political disbelief and to alter the entire logic of the public sphere, these actors present themselves as the "saviors of the nation," persuading a weary public tired of "traditional" politics. In order to focus the study and acknowledge the strong political presence of these figures on social media, this paper will analyze the Instagram profiles of right-wing politicians Jair Bolsonaro and André Ventura, taking into account the 30 days leading up to the latest presidential elections in each country. Given this scenario, the developed project will examine the rise of right-wing populism on social media, producing a comparative analysis through the categorization of the content posted during the stipulated timeframe. Finally, the similarities and discrepancies found between the analyzed political leaders will be examined, with the aim of understanding the growth of right-wing populism on social media from the perspective of each country.
