Abstract(s)
No percurso da história a arquitectura foi usada como instrumento ao serviço de várias instituições, sendo as principais a religião e a política. Esta modificou-se ao longo dos tempos para se adaptar a valores pessoais e colectivos, pensamentos e ideologias, afectando toda a evolução da cidade e a forma como esta pode ser habitada.
Desde a ideia das cidades utópicas aos movimentos arquitectónicos baseados em ideais políticos, a cidade e os seus habitantes foram arrastados entre suposições e direitos e deveres. É através dos trabalhos de Henri Lefebvre, Neil Brenner, David Harvey, entre outros, que podemos ver a evolução desta problemática.
A arquitectura como instrumento deveria estar sempre a favor de quem a usa e não de quem a pratica; é esta a conclusão a que vários autores chegaram. É assim que serão analisados os problemas actuais da cidade, tanto na grande escala como na pequena, do ponto de vista do utilizador/habitante. O direito à cidade foi um problema subentendido durante muito tempo e, que nos dias de hoje, ganha importância para ser debatido por todos os intervenientes que fazem parte da cidade.
In the course of history, architecture has been used as an instrument in service of multiple institutions, such as religion and politics. Architecture molded itself, trying to adapt to several personal or colective values, ways of thinking and ideologies, this affected the way we think about the city and how we can live in it. Beginning with the idea of utopian cities and leading up to architectural movements, based on political ideals, the city and its inhabitants were constantly dragged between rights and suppositions. It’s through the works of Henri Lefebvre, Neil Brenner, David Harvey and others that we are able to see the evolution of this problem. Architecture as an instrument should always be in favor of the people who use it instead of the people who practice it; this is the conclusion that several authors got to. Being this the method applied to solve the present problems that occur in the city, from the perpective of the user. The right to the city has been an underestimated problem for a long time and only in present days has it gain the importance to be discussed by all who integrate the city.
