Abstract(s)
Since the 80’s we’ve been noticing that the model of urban growth has been suffering an inversion. While urban centers are facing an abandonment process, demographic aging and the loss of its social and cultural identity, we see that there’s an increase of the occupation and waterproofing of the agriculture ground, that associated to the unconscious use of the natural resources and energy and the expansion of infra structures, provokes a bigger environmental impact. Regarding this situation, it’s propose with this dissertation, enhance the protection and restoration of built heritage, not only to preserve our identity and our collective memory, but also as a means of combating the dynamics of the current attitudes of urban dispersion and fragmentation together with the problems that it brings. The permaculture is here applied as a planning tool whose principles, aggregate to the knowledge and traditional construction methods with low environmental impact, are able to meet the basic needs of human beings without degrading the environment. Thus, it is presented a proposition for the rehabilitation of a building in the historical center of Guarda. This proposition taking into account an efficient planning and natural energy (sun, wind, rain, light, water flow) of the surrounding vegetation and building practices to reach a high level of sustainability and self-sufficiency. This dissertation concludes that it is possible to use the permaculture as an ecological tool to reach a sustainable building rehabilitation.
