This report was prepared as part of the "Internship" course unit of the Integrated Master's Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Beira Interior. The document is structured into three chapters, each corresponding to one of the internship areas: the Scientific Research component (Chapter I), the Professional Experience in Hospital Pharmacy (Chapter II), and the Professional Experience in Community Pharmacy (Chapter III). Chapter One pertains to the research project entitled “Development of a multiparticulate calcium alginate system for sustained release of nanoemulsions”. This work was carried out at RISE-Health, University of Beira Interior, with the primary objective of formulating nanoemulsions and encapsulating them in alginate particles, aiming to enhance the stability and prolong the release of lipophilic drugs, namely Nestorone®. The nanoemulsions were encapsulated in alginate particles, a natural, biocompatible, and biodegradable polymer widely recognized for its ability to form gels through ionic crosslinking in the presence of divalent cations such as calcium. The application of this sustained-release system is intended to reduce the frequency of drug administration, thereby promoting greater adherence to the therapeutic regimen and, consequently, improving treatment efficacy. Within the scope of this study, the dye Oil Red O, traditionally used for staining lipids in biological tissues, was employed as a tracer to monitor the release of the nanoemulsion over time. The results obtained highlight the potential of alginate particles loaded with nanoemulsions as a promising platform for controlled-release systems of lipophilic drugs, particularly for long-term therapeutic applications. Chapter Two is dedicated to the curricular internship undertaken in the area of Hospital Pharmacy, which took place from February 3rd to March 28th, 2025, at the Pharmaceutical Services of the Local Health Unit of Cova da Beira, under the supervision of Drª Maria Olímpia Fonseca. This chapter provides a detailed description of the activities carried out during the internship, as well as of the various areas in which hospital pharmacists operate. Chapter Three addresses the internship carried out in Community Pharmacy, held from March 31st to June 20th, 2025, at Farmácia Pedroso, under the supervision of Dr João Vale. This chapter outlines the various activities inherent to the daily practice of community pharmacy, with particular emphasis on the roles and responsibilities assumed during the internship period.
