Abstract(s)
A pontuação total
as aulas.
Introduction: The Faculdade de Ciências da Saúde (FCS), Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI), like other institutions dedicated to the teaching of Medicine, has a crucial role in training future health professionals. Medical schools must take into account all aspects that may influence the learning process. The educational environment has an important role in this process and the way it is experienced by students is closely related to their achievements, satisfaction and success. Objectives: 1) Characterize the learning environment experienced by medical students of the FCS and identify its strengths and weaknesses; 2) Characterize the learning environment experienced by students in different academic years; 3) Relate perceptions of the educational environment with students' sociodemographic data. Methods: To characterize the educational environment, we applied the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) to the medical students of the FCS. This questionnaire was combined with the collection of sociodemographic data of students. The data were analyzed according to the usual descriptive analysis (frequencies, means, standard deviation, maximum and minimum). The effect of independent variables on the dependent variable was determined through an analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Tukey's test and by t test. The results were considered significant at p value <0.05. It was also determined the internal consistency of the questionnaire and its subscales using Cronbach alpha coefficient. Results: 472 students, of the universe of 683, completed the questionnaire. It was evidenced good internal consistency of the questionnaire (alpha = 0.9). The total score of DREEM was 126/200 ± 21, revealing that students perceive positively the educational environment in the FCS. It was identified that there is a weak support system for students with stress problems. Students feel too tired to enjoy the course activities. Another problem is related to the time factor, its organization and use during the classes. Students also revealed that they feel bored during school activities and they seem to doubt the preparation of the teachers for lessons. Students of the Year 2 are those with more positive perceptions, while those of the 1st and 3rd years are those with the worst perceptions of the educational environment. It was also found that parents’ qualifications have influence on student’s perceptions. Those students whose parents have higher educational levels have better perceptions of the educational environment. Conclusion: The educational environment in the FCS is perceived positively by medical students. We must take into account that the weak areas of the educational environment must be priorities for optimization the educational environment. It should be paid particular attention to 1st and 3rd years, because they are those with worse perceptions of the educational environment.
