Abstract(s)
A presente
In the current context in which we live, in which the pandemic is spreading across the world, causing destructive repercussions, both socially and economically, it is important to know more about the responses that companies adopt in the face of the current crisis. This research aims to investigate and understand the types of responses that Brazilian family businesses have adopted in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Regarding the types of responses of companies to crises, a model is used that serves as the basis for this investigation and that focuses on four types: containment, perseverance, innovation and exit (Wenzel et al., 2020). Containment corresponds to cost and complexity reduction measures, which can have positive effects, but also lead to decreased performance. Perseverance refers to maintaining business activities, focusing on keeping operations going through the crisis. Innovation occurs when companies focus on renewing their business strategy, which can lead to new ways of thinking and acting. On the other hand, the exit represents the closure of activities or the change of business area. Based on the literature review on family businesses, crisis management and crisis responses, this paper aims to explore and offer contributions on facing the COVID-19 crisis in Brazil. Therefore, a qualitative case study investigation was carried out, through interviews with Brazilian businessmen, on the types of responses that Brazilian family businesses adopted in the face of this pandemic crisis. For the treatment and analysis of the data, we resorted to content analysis, with the exploration of text introduced in the MaxQda software and its proper analysis. Thus, it was possible to conclude that the four types of answers were used by Brazilian entrepreneurs, not only confirming what was proposed in the model, but also expanding it, since various combinations were identified between them, with innovation being the most mentioned. Thus, it is considered that this research provides a relevant empirical contribution on the subject, allowing more subsidies for the understanding of the organizations facing crises.
