Abstract(s)
A elevada prevalência, impacto
Estas
Pain is inherent to the human condition and plays a crucial and indispensable role in protecting life. However, unlike acute pain, chronic pain does not have any evolutionary benefits and constitutes a disease itself. The high prevalence and economic, social and emotional impact of this disease make it one of the greatest challenges in medicine today, since, despite scientific advances, the treatment of chronic pain remains difficult and often frustrating, which results in a large percentage of patients reporting difficulties in its relief. By studying the factors that influence the process of pain chronification, it is possible to understand that the therapeutic success of chronic pain depends on the adoption of a multidisciplinary, multidimensional approach focused on each patient's personal experience of pain. Currently, the understanding of the mind-body connection is increasingly robust and supported by scientific evidence, and within this field of research, Mind-Body Medicine is developing. This thesis explores Mind-Body Medicine and how it can contribute to the treatment and management of chronic pain. Thus, mind-body interventions such as Meditation and Movement Therapies (Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Dance) were analyzed. These therapies have shown benefits in reducing pain, improving functional disability and improving emotional resilience, promoting greater emotional well-being and acceptance of pain. This literature review suggests that the incorporation of mind-body practices combined with conventional pain treatment results in improvements in patients' quality of life and in reducing the impact of chronic pain on society. Although the results are promising, there is a need for more longitudinal studies to validate long-term effectiveness and assess the economic viability of implementing these therapies in health systems.
