Abstract(s)
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized mainly by symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between stigma, peer relationships and school performance perceived by caregivers of children diagnosed with ADHD. A qualitative methodology using semi-structured interviews was used and ten parents of children with ADHD, aged between 5 and 12 years old, participated in this study. The results revealed that most parents did not perceive stigma in the neighborhood in relation to their child, although half had difficulty in finding reliable caregivers. Regarding peer relationships, most parents report that their child has at least one friend. Most argue that children with ADHD should be treated as others, but some consider that they should have educational measures adapted to their difficulties. The difficulties most reported by parents are related to concentration, task planning and execution, and challenging behavior. These results highlight the importance of fighting stigma, promoting healthy peer relationships, and the importance of developing strategies to improve the academic performance of these children.
