This dissertation was developed to complete the Integrated Master’s Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Beira Interior and is structured into three chapters: Chapter I – Social Isolation and the Consumption of Benzodiazepines in Castelo Branco; Chapter II – Community Pharmacy Internship Report; Chapter III – Hospital Pharmacy Internship Report. The research componente aimed to assess the relationship between social isolation and benzodiazepine uses among adult residents of Castelo Branco who attend community pharmacies. Secondary objectives were to estimating the prevalence of social isolation and benzodiazepine use and to comparing both outcomes across sociodemographic groups. Two studies were conducted: a cross-sectional epidemiological study with a sample of 285 participants, aimed at estimating the prevalence of the variables under analysis; and a casecontrol study involving 90 participants, to compare social isolation between users and nonusers. Data collection was based on a questionnaire conducted in two community pharmacies. The instrument included three sections: Part I – Sociodemographic characterization; Part II – Assessment of social isolation (SIS and selected MSPSS items); Part III – Assessment of benzodiazepine use. The main results revealed that 15,8% of participants reported benzodiazepine use, 7,4% were socially isolated, and 37,9% were at risk of social isolation. Social isolation was associated with proximity to family/friends, employment status, marital status, and cohabitation status. Benzodiazepine use was associated with age and living arrangments. The case-control analysis indicated that non-users reported lower perceived social isolation, while users were more likely to be socially isolated; however, these differences were not statistically significant. Chapter II describes my internship in community Pharmacy, at farmácia Ferrer in Castelo Branco, under the supervision of Dra. Sílvia Rodrigues, Technical Director. Over the twelveweek placement – from 3 February to 24 April 2025 – I had the opportunity to understand the day-to-day functioning of a community Pharmacy and to acquire various skills, ranging from knowledge of different medicines to interacting with patients. Chapter III presents my hospital Pharmacy internship at the Pharmaceutical Services of the Amato Lusitano Hospital in Castelo Branco, under the supervision of Dr. Sandra Queimado, Technical Director. This internship took place over eight weeks – from 28 April to 20 June 2025 – covering several areas of hospital Pharmacy practice and enabling integration into the activities developed by the healthcare professional team.
