Abstract(s)
Nature Tourism is one of the principle factors that makes Portugal a destination of excellence, quality and prestige. Standing out from the national territory as a whole is Serra da Estrela, a unique area with a rich natural heritage, which is transfigured throughout the different seasons of the year. At the highest point of mainland Portugal we find different landscapes and diverse natural habitats. Together with the climate, these areas have the necessary conditions for the development of a wide variety of activities in places such as mountains, estuaries, escarpments, ponds or plains. The biodiversity of the fauna and flora, as well as the quality and diversity of the landscape, provides opportunities for Nature Tourism throughout the year. In winter, due to the presence of snow, it is possible to go skiing and snowboarding, using the ski resort. In the summer, there is the opportunity to take walks on footpaths and enjoy the mountainous landscape or climb the already known routes of the Cântaro Magro or Covão D'Ametade. In the region of Serra da Estrela the gastronomy is unique. It is known for its intense palates which, when combined with the surrounding atmosphere, has contributed to the increase in attraction for tourists. Despite being extinct, the practices of pastoralism and transhumance are part of the cultural component that so well characterises this region. These are the driving factors of tourism in Serra da Estrela, which supports the importance of investing in facilities that support Nature Tourism. In this way, this dissertation and project proposal will address, firstly, the importance of the tourism sector, its evolution over the last years and also its role in the development of Portugal. Next, it will analyse the characteristics and potential that Nature Tourism has in Portugal, particularly in Serra da Estrela, by reflecting on strategies for its growth. This analysis is fundamental to fully explore all the variables that justify the pertinence of the intervention proposal. Through the restoration of buildings in the intervention area and the creation of new volumes, it will attempt to live up to the name and identity of the Serra da Estrela; providing a direct contact with nature and with the sensory experiences that it offers.
