Abstract(s)
The Iberian Peninsula was, until the XX century, a stage of several mutations, socio-cultural and economic transformations with great relevance, and perpetuated in the imagination of the common individual, till the present day. However, these transformations resulted in a very specific identity, consisting of common variables of the two independent States. These variables, also resulting from a legacy left by the first peoples to inhabit the Iberian Peninsula, are called Iberian identity. It was on the basis of this Iberian identity that the present study resulted in a work that sought to cover and clarify "identity" as a promoter of relations between Portugal and Spain, making a journey through the history of the two peoples, as well as their integration into a united and democratic Europe. It was also relevant to this study to note the role of cooperative movements, especially in border areas, between the two States in the international arena, particularly in the European project, the European Union. The Center for Iberian Studies, a non-profit cultural structure, whose mission is to study the Iberian culture has played an active role, for seventeen years, in cross-border relations and in the promotion of an identity, camouflaged by years of strife. However, what stands out in the present study is that, in fact, this identity connection, that unites the two countries, could be a key for the continuity of good relations and Iberian Cooperation, which has been maintained over the last 33 years, in this big Project that is the European project.
