Abstract(s)
Rita Ferreira.
This report, to obtain a master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, is divided into two chapter: The first one describes my research work over the past few months and the second chapter illustrates thoroughly my experience as an intern at a community pharmacy. With my research, the main goal would be to understand what kind of strategies can be led by community pharmacists aimed at increasing adherence to therapy and consequent control of the disease in elderly asthmatic patients and their results. Despite being a disease usually related to a younger population, asthma has been increasingly diagnosed in elderly patients, a number that tends to grow with the increase of the elderly population, which is expected to double in the coming years. Medication adherence seems to be significantly low in asthmatic patients, especially in elderly patients, which can be explained by the typical mental decline with advancing age. Low adherence to therapy is proportionally related to non-control of the disease and, consequently, a worse quality of life. Asthma costs the Portuguese State around 400 million euros annually; knowing that a patient with uncontrolled asthma requires approximately twice the costs compared to a patient with a controlled disease, it is possible to understand the interest that interventions that enhance disease control have from a economic point of view. The community pharmacist, a highly qualified health professional, is also the health professional most accessible to the general population, even the elderly population. Thus, the role of the community pharmacist can be taken further, intervening directly in the health and quality of life of patients. In this paperwork, eight studies carried out in various parts of the world, were exhaustively analyzed and in all of them the results were very positive and promising. The second chapter of this work describes the most varied activities related to the daily practice of the pharmaceutical profession, carried out within the scope of the internship in community pharmacy, throughout the months of September 2022 and January 2023, at Farmácia Central de Valbom, under Dr. Rita Ferreira’s supervision. The last few months have been extremely enriching from a professional point of view as they have allowed the consolidation of all the knowledge acquired over the years of learning in college. The internship in a community pharmacy reinforced, for me, the importance of the community pharmacist among the population, since the pharmacy is usually the first place that the population goes to seek help, be it physical or psychological. The community pharmacist is much more than a mere “medicine dispenser” and it is time to be recognized as such.
