Abstract(s)
benéficos adquiridos desde cedo, praticados continuamente, contribuindo positivamente
idade e a escolaridade.
considerados outros preditores (e.g. escolaridade).
“Thinking About Ageing” (TAA), cujos dados foram recolhidos aplicando a escala “38-
envelhecimento.
Aging is, in part, a socially constructed concept, influenced by culture, expectations, and personal experiences. Older adult’s expectations about aging influence their self-care behaviors and involvement with health, which are essential for successful aging. A healthy lifestyle is a set of beneficial behaviors acquired early on, practiced continuously, and contributing positively to health and longevity. It is not only the result of personal choices but it is also influenced by factors such as socioeconomic status, age, and education. The main objective of this study is to assess expectations about aging as a possible predictor of lifestyle when other predictors (e.g., education) are considered. A total of 799 participants, aged between 18 and 82 years (M=35.12; SD=15.680), 221 males and 578 females, participated in the study. This research was part of the "Thinking About Aging" (TAA) project, whose data were collected by applying the 38- item Expectations Regarding Aging survey (ERA-38), the lifestyle questionnaire, and the sociodemographic questionnaire. Preliminary correlational analysis revealed significant associations between lifestyle, age, education, and expectations regarding aging. Next, a hierarchical multiple linear regression was performed, and the results indicated that 8.8% of lifestyle is explained by the variables described above. It was also found that expectations about aging remain a significant predictor when considering first other predictors in the regression model. The results suggest that expectations about aging emerge as a significant predictor of lifestyle and consequently promoter of health attitudes, contributing to a better aging process.
