Abstract(s)
The aim of this dissertation is to provide a description and gain an understanding of the Roma community, in particular regarding gender issues and the role of women within that community. More specifically, an analysis will be made of their day-to-day lives and their personal and community outlook. Firstly, two essential dynamics, gender and ethnicity, are explored from a neutral/impartial perspective in relation to this theme. A study was made of several characteristics of the group including family relationships and how they are developed, and gender roles within the Roma community were analysed. The most suitable and potentially fruitful method for the study of this topic was then selected. This was a qualitative method, more specifically semi-structured interviews, with the objective being that the interviewees could reflect upon their perspectives, opinions and ideas on the topic. An analysis was made of the results arising from this method and it was possible to draw some conclusions. The main conclusion of this study is that tradition still retains significant importance among Roma women, which implies slower adaptive development compared to society in general. Another conclusion is that all the women are aware that there is already significant evolution of the younger tiers in relation to the previous generation, in various fields of their lives. As stated in the conclusion, it is necessary to carry out a study in greater depth in order to gain significant insights from the data explored here. It would also be important for society in general to understand how the Roma community in Portugal is adapting and evolving.
