Actualmente, o Homem vive numa aldeia global e por isso há a necessidade de aprender várias línguas para que possa circular entre países e disfrutar da sua língua e cultura sem quaisquer constrangimentos. Para concretizar esse objectivo, há a necessidade de estudar uma língua e para tal recorre-se aos manuais escolares. Deste modo o manual aparece como um instrumento de trabalho muito importante na aprendizagem de uma língua estrangeira. Nos anos 70 e 80, aprender uma língua era interiorizar uma lista de regras gramaticais e traduzir os clássicos de literatura da respectiva língua. Com o evoluir das sociedades, nos anos 90, os linguístas introduzem a competência sociocultural e o método comunicativo. Aprender uma língua é mais que saber uma lista de regras gramaticais, é sobretudo conhecer a língua na sua vertente cultural para que o aprendente possa numa situação quotidiana usar esses conhecimentos de uma forma consciente e contextualizada. No entanto, os manuais de língua estrangeira ainda continuam a dar primazia aos conteúdos gramaticais, deixando para segundo plano os aspectos socioculturais.

To achieve this goal, it is necessary to study a language and for this purpose people resort to textbooks. These textbooks thus represent an extremely important resource when learning a foreign language. In the 70s and 80s learning a language meant studying a list of grammatical rules and translating the literary classics of the language in question. As society evolved, in the 90s linguists introduced sociocultural skills and communication techniques. Learning a language means more than simply knowing a list of grammatical rules and above all knowing the cultural aspects of the language so that the learner can use their knowledge in day-to-day situations in a fully aware, contextualized manner. However, foreign language text books continue to focus mainly on grammatical contexts and sociocultural factors continue to take second place.
