Abstract(s)
The present work is divided in two chapters: Chapter I ā Report from the stage in community pharmacy and Chapter II ā Characterization of the consumption profile of benzodiazepines in the Cova da Beira region. The report from the stage on the community pharmacy is subdivided in several areas, concerning the drug and its dispensation, pharmacistās counseling, handling of the drugs, biochemistry and physiological parameters, and pharmacy management. The stage on the community pharmacy allowed me to learn about the real functions and skills of the pharmacist. It showed me that the pharmacist, as an health professional, has a key role in counseling the patients, having the power to change habits, transmit knowledge, give security on drug and other health-related products use, and inform, which is the best treatment for each particular situation. The research project consisted in the characterization of the consumption profile of benzodiazepines in the Cova da Beira region. This is a countryside area markedly underprivileged which promotes the consumption of these kinds of drugs. Thus, we observed high consumption of drugs indicated for anxiety, sleep disturbances and depression. Women are the ones who consume more of those drugs (58,9%). Furthermore, young people consume more anxiety drugs, while the older people consume medication for sleep disturbances. Among benzodiazepines, the most consumed present an anxiolytic action (93%) and from these, those with an intermediate half-life are the most used (62,5%). Alprazolam is the most used intermediate half-life benzodiazepine (68%), being diazepam the most consumed (36,7%) amongst those presenting long half-life. In what concerns the benzodiazepines with hypnotic action, brotizolam is the most consumed compound. The majority of the inquired have access to this type of drug through physician prescription (81,8%). Considering these results, we realized that a significant percentage of population from Cova da Beira consumes these drugs, and a bigger control on their usage seemed necessary.
