Abstract(s)
Rehabilitation besides an alternative to new construction is an opportunity, sustainable and ecological, to raise our culture, to give a new life to buildings that for the most diverse reasons were tamed by their degradation over time. Everything in life is ephemeral, and we architects have the privilege and the ability to return that life to traditional architecture, which is part of our culture. However, there are still many cases of old buildings, rich in heritage and with a lot of history, in full degradation that over time they lose their essence, and they collapse without being given due importance and requalification. Alongside this architectural aspect, there are countless traditional arts that disappear over time, running the risk of becoming extinct, such as the fine basketry in Vila de Gonçalo. This dissertation aims to rehabilitate a property, more specifically an old manor house, which was acquired by two families, thus being divided. The building is in two distinct phases, one already in ruins and the other is still furnished, but not inhabited, where some maintenance changes have already been made, namely the replacement of the windows and the roof structure. The proposal meets the creation of a museum space, the organization of the street and the creation of a new volume for a basket making workshop, with the aim of disseminating, preserving and promoting the art produced in the Vila de Gonçalo located in the district and municipality of Guarda. The essence and preservation of the building's history will be an important point to take into account, as it will involve the demolition of existing adjoining annexes that devalue it and for respecting its image and materiality, essentially of masonry and wood structures, through the innovation of techniques and adaptation to the program. That said, the present project aims to enhance the historic and heritage architecture, which in many parts of our country is abandoned, as well as the old arts that disappear over time, thus contributing to a proposal that could be a step towards cultural and economic development of this small village.
