Abstract(s)
O estudo
envolveu 156 pais e mães de crianças entre os 3 e os 6 anos (M = 3,88; DP =
0,83), que preencheram as versões portuguesas da Parenting Sense of
Competence Scale (PSOC) e do Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQPor).
The parenting sense of competence refers to the parents’ feelings regarding their parenting performance, in terms of satisfaction and effectiveness. Several studies have suggested a correlation between parents’ perception of competence and the existence of behavioral problems (e.g., externalized and internalized) and prosocial behaviors (e.g., cooperation) in their children. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the parenting sense of competence and the perception of behavioral and prosocial problems in preschool-age children. The study involved 156 parents of children aged between 3 and 6 years (M = 3,88; SD = 0,83), who completed the Portuguese versions of the Parenting Sense of Competence Scale (PSOC) and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ-Por). The results demonstrate a negative and statistically significant association between Satisfaction and Efficacy (PSOC) and Emotional Symptoms, Behavior Problems, Hyperactivity, Peer Relationship Problems and Total Difficulties (SDQ-Por). On the other hand, there was a positive and statistically significant association between Parental Satisfaction and Efficacy and Prosocial Behaviors (SDQ-Por) in children. It was also found that girls and children with siblings present higher scores in the Pro-Social Behaviors subscale and that mothers with higher education present lower levels of Satisfaction when compared to mothers with schooling up to high school education. The results are discussed considering the relevance and implications of the study.
