Abstract(s)
The successful use of contact lenses is often related with the interaction of the lens material with the physiological parameters of the cornea and in particular with the lacrimal structure. In this context, it is a priority that the lens material is biocompatible with the ocular tissues and also resistant to microorganisms and substances present on the tear film and ocular surface. This study consisted in analyzing and characterizing the contaminants in worn and un-worn contact lenses and it was divided in two experiments. The first one consisting in analyzing and characterizing the type of deposits and microorganisms present on contact lenses that have been worn on daily basis for one month, and the second one consisting in evaluate the tendency of the lens material to adsorb two types of protein (lysozyme and albumin), without the influence of the ocular defense mechanisms or the care regimen. The first experiment showed more organic deposits on silicone-hydrogel materials (balafilcon A e lotrafilcon B) and more inorganic deposits on hydrogel materials (omafilcon B). The second experiment only allowed concluding that there was a higher deposition of lisozime on the three contact lens materials. In conclusion, the adsorption of substances and microorganisms is influenced by a lot of factors, so it is difficult to define which are more relevant because it varies between materials.
