Abstract(s)
The present work, elaborated to obtain a master's degree in Architecture, is defined by a critical analysis and by the elaboration of a proposal for the rehabilitation of the old Termas da Amieira. It seeks to understand how existing resources can be used, both in terms of leisure and well-being, and in terms of tourism. Health and wellness tourism is on the rise and Portugal has a rich and varied abundance with regard to thermal waters that are scattered throughout its territory (mainland and islands). In this sense, thermalism2 recovers its historical preponderance with regard to rehabilitation. However, most of the thermal resorts are limited to buildings that are deactivated with aging facilities, out of context and, sometimes, in a great state of degradation, as is the case of the object of study of the present work. In this sense, this dissertation approaches the importance of rehabilitation, in the context of architecture, completing this research with a project that intervenes in a group of buildings that are mostly in ruins and that, due to their historical “mark”, have a significant importance for the region where they operate, and which are recognized by the local community. It is a place that seeks the dignity of other times, combining leisure with health and well-being, attracting people to this reality, by its nature. In this context, it is not intended to recreate the old spas, but rather to reclassify a degraded architectural complex into a new space for leisure and well-being.
