Abstract(s)
journalism.
The present dissertation aims at analyzing the importance that Great Television Reports have in the context of investigative journalism, considering current trends, structures and models of journalistic production followed today. The work intends to make this analysis from the perception of the journalists from three generalist channels (RTP, SIC and TVI) and considering the journalistic works produced in the scope of what continues to be considered the “noble genre” of journalism. The research problem is thus linked to the identification of the characteristics of the Great Television Reports as investigative journalism pieces, yet considering in particular the functions, repercussions and impact that these journalistic contents may have on society. To answer the problem of this work, we start by making a bibliographic review focused on the development of investigative journalism and the role of the well-known watchdog journalism. In the theoretical framework we explore the importance of information sources and news values, but also news scheduling. We also pay attention to television journalistic genres, especially the Great Report, central in the context of this work. We consider the origins of this genre, its evolution and the most recent trends in the production and exhibition of Great Television Reports through the different programs broadcast on the three national broadcasters. In the second part of the work we attempt, through the crossing between quantitative and qualitative methodologies, to collect data that allows us to respond to the objectives of the work. We begin by surveying the works of Great Television Reporting produced in the last decade on each of the three channels (RTP, SIC, TVI), in order to identify the main trends in terms of thematic category, duration and exhibition space of journalistic works, in what constituted the most quantitative dimension of the work. In the qualitative approach, we conducted a set of interviews with journalists from each channel in order to understand their perspectives, as authors and professionals, on the practices developed at the level of investigative journalism and their relationship with the Great Reports Televisions. The data collected not only allowed us to address the research problem, since we conclude that Great Television Reporting is particularly important in the context of investigative journalism. The impact of these Great Reports goes far beyond the metrics indicated by the audiences, as this is one of the genres that can best contribute to journalism fulfilling its duties as vigilant and overseer of the different powers.
