Abstract(s)
condicionando a autonomia.
O presente trabalho
The aging of the world population becomes an irrefutable fact. It is estimated that the number of elderly people aged 60 and over is growing faster than younger age groups. As a consequence, we can observe an increase in diseases that are manifested with age, such as Dementia. Dementia is a generic term used to refer to a disease that consists of the deterioration of cognitive and behavioral performance and conditioning autonomy. (“Dementia | CUF”). Alzheimer's is considered the most common type of dementia, according to the WHO (World Health Organization), there are 35.6 million people with AD (Alzheimer's disease) in the world, and this number is expected to double by 2030 and triple by 2050. With the increase in elderly people with AD, the difficulties of patients and their companions can be easily observed, with the development of the disease. The help of specialists becomes necessary, so many families tend to recur to daycare or long-term institutions. When carrying out this work, it was possible to conclude that most institutions are not specialized, making the elderly people feel themselves in hospital environments, raising problems such as loneliness, depression, and irritability. This work aims to bring a more human and personalized format to long-stay institutions through NeuroArchitecture (study of neuroscience applied to architecture) and to understand the best environment possible for elderly people with Alzheimer's, where they can have a more active and healthy life. Research was done on Alzheimer's disease, NeuroArchitecture, and studies based on projects with worldwide references of environments considered as a new version of long-stay institutions specialized in elderly people with dementia and, after that, a preliminary project of a specialized long-stay institution for elderly people with Alzheimer's located in Lagos, Algarve, with characteristics specially designed for these people and a space that is considered worthy for the residents.
