Abstract(s)
The Phonological Deficit Theory postulates that the difficulties caused by Specific Learning Disability with Reading Deficit (PAE-DL) are caused by a dysfunction in phonetic awareness mechanisms. However, several studies suggest that the cognitive difficulties caused by PAE-DL are not restricted to the phonological domain, with some data suggesting the presence of limitations in the functioning of other cognitive systems, which makes the subjects with PAE-DL produce a elevated number of everyday cognitive failures, which may have an impact on the self-concept of these subjects. This study seeks to ascertain the existence of a greater number of eveyday failures of memory, attention and motor functioning of a sample of adults with PAE-DL compared to a control group; and the existence of differences of self-concept, perception of social support and perception of self-efficacy between these two groups. For this purpose, two self-report measures were used: The Cognitive Failures Questionnaire and the Clinical Inventory of Self-Concept. The results of this study suggest that the participants diagnosed with PAE-DL present a significantly greater number of eveyday failures of memory, attention and motor functioning. However, it was not verified the existence of significant differences between these two groups in terms of self-concept, perception of social acceptance and perception of self-efficacy. The results in the QFC suggests that the everyday cognitive limitations of the PAE-DL population are not restricted to activities that require phonetic processing and to the academic domain, what suggests that the etiological explanation offered by the Phonological Deficit heory is limited. Thus, a holistic paradigm must be adopted in order to fully understand the functioning of the PAE-DL and to develop intervention plans appropriate to the needs of this population.
