Abstract(s)
Medicina (Sex and Gender Based Medicine).
There is growing evidence in the literature of the benefits of applying a sex and gender based medicine perspective. That is, a perspective that deals with the physiological and pathophysiological differences between females and males, but also considers the social construction of gender and how the resulting social differences influence people’s health and health behaviors. By discussing the possible existence of a gender bias in medicine, which has been illustrated with the use of evidence-based medicine, we intend to assess the relevance of introducing a medical perspective based on sex and gender in medicine, discussing the implications that this will bring to clinical practice and, in particular, to medical education. In terms of empirical research, we resorted to documentary analysis of existing information on the websites and, particularly, in the curricula of Integrated Masters in Medicine of public medical schools in Portugal, in order to understand to what extent the relevance of incorporating a gender dimension in medical education is assumed, and to what extent it is present in the syllabus of the Course Units that make up the Study Plan.
