Abstract(s)
Stroke is one of the major causes of mobility and mortality in developed countries having severe medical, social and economic consequences. Several studies correlate the level of sexual hormones with the incidence of vascular disease and with the biological response after stroke. Therefore it’s crucial to understand how disruption of hormonal homeostasis can influence the pathophysiology of this disease. Objectives: Review the role of estrogens and androgens in stroke pathophysiology; Review the role of epigenetics in stroke pathophysiology; Review the endocrine receptor concept and its role in health and disease; Review the role of endocrine disruptors in stroke pathophysiology, concerning its contribution to hormonal deregulation and its epigenetic impact. Methodology: Reading and analysis of articles concerning this theme, of the last 5 years, in pubmed.com database.
