Abstract(s)
Nowadays, the organizational environments are increasingly turbulent, uncertain and complex due to intrinsic/ extrinsic factors (e.g. globalization, technological innovation, transnational economy). Given these changes in the labor market, companies must restructure to ensure their survival, growth and competiveness. Therefore, it is essential to adopt new tools, giving them real competitive advantage. The leadership style and emotional skills have gain highlighted since the success of organizations depends on their leaders. Leadership behaviors adopted influence the effectiveness of the conduct of the employees and the achievement of organizational objectives. Organizations are governed by a complex network of relationships. Consequently, it becomes important to study the emotional intelligence. This paper aims to analyze the following variables - leadership and emotional intelligence - in Portuguese organizations, particularly in the micro, small and medium companies. It is proposed to identify the leadership styles adopted. Moreover, verify that the leaders reveal emotional intelligence and if they consider it in the exercise of leadership as well as the influence of this on organizational performance. I used a qualitative methodology, to investigate the real performance of four different leading organizations through case studies. It was concluded that leaders reveal emotional intelligence, maintain positive social relationships with the respective employees and are effective in terms of achieving the organizational goals. However, it was found that the leaders, despite consider emotional intelligence in the exercise of leadership, the importance attached to them varies between them. Thereby, the leaders capable of using their emotional skills effectively are the ones who adopt mainly the style of transformational leadership. They assume as central organizational purpose, their companiesâ growth in the medium and long term. Thus, such leaders have a clear competitive advantage.
