Abstract(s)
Materiais e Métodos: Este estudo observacional e retrospetivo analisou dados
no CHUCB.
superior a 13 anos.
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has particularly affected the mental health of children and adolescents with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, conclusions on the long-term consequences on this vulnerable population are sparse. Therefore, this study’s objective is to assess the long-term impact of the pandemic on the mental health of children and adolescents with ADHD in comparison with a control group. Materials and Methods: This observational and retrospective study analysed data collected at the final stage of the pandemic (between November 2022 and February 2023). Our sample is formed by 37 children and adolescents, aged 9 to 17 years old, divided into two groups: one group of 22 individuals with ADHD and another with 15 individuals without this disorder (control group). All participants were monitored in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry appointments at CHUCB. Two adapted versions of COVID-19 Questionnaire 2 were used, one for caregivers and the other for individuals aged 13 or more. Results: We found a statistically significant association between the variable “group” and some variables related to psychological distress (p = 0,032) and sleep (p = 0,040). Significant associations were also observed between the variable “age group” and others, namely the ones concerning sociability (p = 0,031) and the frequency of regressive behaviours (p = 0,029). Lastly, it was discovered significant differences between caregivers’ and adolescents’ answers, namely regarding the frequency of choleric outbursts (p = 0,032), comparatively with the pre-pandemic period. Conclusion: The results of this study are concordant with the conclusions described on the scientific literature, by reflecting an increased vulnerability of children and adolescents with ADHD in comparison with those without this disorder.
