Abstract(s)
This document is divided into three distinct parts. The first part, Chapter I, describes the research work on HPV. The second and third chapters focus on the internship reports made in Community Pharmacy and Hospital Pharmacy respectively. Chapter I: HPV is a very common virus and it is responsible for a large number of infections. It is estimated that HPV affects about 630 million people resulting in a worldwide prevalence between 9 and 13%. An infection with this virus can progress to cervical cancer, among other cancers. HPV 16 and HPV 18 are considered to be the most carcinogenic types. The main objective of this research was to study the prevalence of the type of high-risk HPV in women followed at the Gynaecology surgery in CHCB, as well as to assess some risk factors for HPV infection. The population consisted of 2278 women followed between August 2012 and August 2013. Of the 228 women with a positive HPV test, 72 (31%) were younger than 30 years old and only 11 women (5%) were older than 60. Most women with HPV positive test had no previous history of HPV. 73% of the infected women revealed the presence of at least one kind of high-risk HPV excluding HPV 16 and HPV 18. However, the percentage of infection with HPV 16 was significantly higher than those induced by HPV 18 infection. In this study, 32 women (14%) presented some type of intraepithelial neoplasia. The cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 1 (CIN 1) was the most representative one. Of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 (CIN 3) cases, half revealed the presence of HPV 16 infection. Regarding risk factors, it was concluded that the age and use of oral contraceptive methods revealed to have a correlation with HPV infection. Chapter II: This chapter reports my internship in Community Pharmacy that held in the FarmĂĄcia da SĂ©, in Guarda, between the 4th February and the 2nd May 2014. During this internship I got to know the real role of the community pharmacist and his various daily functions. Chapter III: This chapter describes my internship in Hospital Pharmacy, which took place between the 5th May and the 20th June 2014, in Pharmaceutical Services Sousa Martins Hospital, in Guarda. With this chapter I intend to describe the various activities performed in daily life by a hospital pharmacist.
