Abstract(s)
O saldo, no
The present work aims to understand how fashion, as a cultural expression, influences the conceptions that children develop of gender and their gender roles in society. For this purpose, a review on gender concepts was made so that, from it, it would be possible to follow a sociological line of interpretation. The study then focused on the infant brain and the personality development in the early years of childhood to analyze how children learn new concepts and place themselves in the universe in which they are inserted. After the analysis, a discussion was made about fashion as an expression of identity and as an instrument of socialization, in order to understand how kid’s fashion teaches children about gender roles. Parents and legal guardians of children were inquired about their beliefs and everyday situations to understand the extent to which these agents, through fashion, influence their children's gender notions. It was found that they are well aware of the stereotypes in children's fashion, their role in the gender socialization of children and the differences in the way boys and girls are raised, although not everyone sees this as a problem. Of the majority of the partakers, who are uncomfortable with gender issues and its stereotypes, it was possible to perceive a frustration regarding the society in which they live in - mainly in relation to its culture, chauvinism and prejudice. The balance, however, is positive, with more and more new brands changing the way children's fashion positions itself regarding gender issues.
